In early 2020, the Oklahoma State Legislature passed H.B. 3826, which amended the petition process, requiring signatures to be matched to at least three data points in the voter file to verify that each signature is linked to a registered voter. In essence, the bill would ensure that only registered voters in the State of Oklahoma could sign petitions. On May 21st, 2020, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed the bill into law, effective November 1st 2020.
Bill Shapard, the founder of Western Petition Systems, contacted us to have a logo and website designed so he could present Western Petition's proposal to the Secretary of State to become the official vendor of petition verification services as required by the new law. Assuming they won the contract (spoiler: they did), Bill also wanted to implement a section of the site that would include tutorial videos on how to fill out and verify the petition signatures.
As Western Petition was a brand new company, we had to start from scratch by creating a logo and brand identity.
We built a scope of work for this project, which required creating a logo from scratch, then building a new website from the ground up using Webflow, and finally writing and incorporating content that informs and educates site visitors.
Western Petition Systems desired a website and brand identity that would WOW the Secretary of State, and also be able to educate and inform petition creators about the new process.
We started with the brand identity, using Adobe Illustrator from start to finish. We chose the color orange to give off a warm, trustworthy feel. For the typeface, we used 'Le Monde' from Adobe Fonts. It's a beautiful Serif font with an elegant "historical" feel to it, and we feel that it really matches the modern and sophisticated yet historical look that Western Petition Systems desired to achieve.
Next, we began wireframing and building out the site using Webflow, our go-to web design and CMS platform. We implemented a CMS for blog posts and tutorial videos, which are coming soon as of writing this post. Finally, we wrote copy to help inform and educate site visitors about the past, present, and future of the initiative petition process across Oklahoma and the entire United States.
We published a beautiful, responsive website and brand identity that achieved all the goals Western Petition desired to achieve. Our website design and copywriting helped Western Petition win the contract with the Secretary of State to become the official vendor of initiative petition verification services. Woo-hoo!
